Biography

     Jackson County Sheriff Mike Wells is a life-long resident of Jackson County.  He is married to Connie Norwood Wells, and has one daughter, Terry, who is married to Jim Goins of Scottsboro.  Sheriff Wells has four grandchildren, Brittany, Tyler, Blaise, and Chas.

     He began his career in law enforcement in 1972 as a deputy at Jackson County Sheriff's Department under Sheriff Bob Collins.  After two years as deputy, he was promoted to investigator.  In 1983 he served as Chief Deputy under Sheriff Paul Mount until his own election as Sheriff in 1991.  In January 2003, he will begin his fourth term as Jackson County Sheriff.

The Department

The Jackson County Sheriff's Department serves citizens throughout the entire 1,069 square miles of Jackson County.  The Sheriff's office employs 27 sworn law enforcement, including the Sheriff and Chief Deputy Dennis Miller, and has 64 full-time employees.

The Jackson County Jail has a combined capacity for housing 212 inmates.  All inmate meals, including meals for the city jail, are prepared at the county jail utilizing inmate labor.  The Sheriff's office also utilizes inmate labor for several duties at the Jackson County Courthouse, such as custodial and vehicle maintenance.

Pistol Permits

Alabama pistol permits for residents of Jackson County are purchased at the Jackson County Sheriff's office.  Applications for permits are available at the Jackson County Sheriff's main office.  Annual Permit Fee for license is $15.00.  Renewable by mail with mail fee and expired permit to:  Jackson County Sheriff's Office, C/O Pistol Permits, 102 East Laurel Street, Scottsboro, AL  35768
